EPC in Debrecen for the Third Transnational Meeting and Study Visit of the EnCLOD Project

On 2–3 April, EPC took part in the third transnational meeting of the project EnCLOD – Enhancing governance Capacities of Local authorities using Open Data, held in Debrecen, Hungary. The meeting was hosted by DKV Debrecen Public Transport Company Ltd., the city’s sole public transport operator.

DKV manages an extensive network of 73 lines, including trams, buses and trolleybuses. In recent years, the company has implemented significant developments, including the introduction of Euro 6 low-emission buses, electric vehicles, and smart stops. Through its Debrecen Smart City division, DKV is a strategic partner in several national and European projects and initiatives.

Among Hungary’s regional cities, Debrecen is currently experiencing a phase of strong economic expansion, driven in particular by major investments in the automotive and battery industries. This growth is expected to result in an increase of approximately 50,000 inhabitants in the coming years. In response, the city is planning to expand its public transport network, introducing new bus lines integrated with MaaS (Mobility as a Service) functionalities.

The pilot action implemented in Debrecen within the framework of EnCLOD will focus on testing a network of low-cost sensors for the collection of spatial data related to the local public transport system. The objective is to develop a structured portfolio of business data that will support the deployment of MaaS-based solutions and contribute to managing the city’s economic growth and projected demographic expansion.

To conclude the meeting, as part of the study visit, DKV organised a guided city tour aboard a historic tram, offering participants an opportunity to explore Debrecen and gain direct insight into the innovations of the local public transport system.
